BJK and Friends Fundraiser

Eleventh Annual BJK And Friends Event Is A Huge Success

LOS ANGELES – A special celebration of Cal State L.A.’s annual athletic department fundraiser turned out to be very special, indeed.

The 11th annual Billie Jean King and Friends, Honoring Joe Shapiro event was held Saturday night at the Langham Huntington Hotel & Spa in Pasadena and featured some moving speeches, entertaining videos and a spirited live auction to conclude the evening.

The event celebrated the 35th anniversary of the “Battle of the Sexes” match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs that was held before a national viewing audience of 50 million people on ABC’s Wide World of Sports on Sept. 20, 1973 and the establishment of Title IX in 1972. Because of Title IX, women were able to receive scholarships to Universities and pursue their education through athletics.

It also honored Anne Douglas, who was presented the 2008 Shapiro Award, which is named in honor of the late attorney, Cal State L.A. teacher and executive committee member of the Billie Jean King fundraiser. He was married to tennis Hall of Famer Pam Shriver, who once again served as the celebrity auctioneer.

The event drew more than 475 people, which marks the biggest turnout in its 11 years. The fund-raiser is expected to net more than $200,000 and bring the 11-year total to more than $1.8 million in proceeds.....more
